Debate over PSLE not a simple one

Summary
Currently, there is still a debate going on about the necessity of PSLE. Most people think it is necessary, but there is a small number who think it is redundant and unneeded. They provided several reasons like how it makes children undergo unnecessary stress which in turn would affect their health, and that it is not a good gauge on one's ability due to young age.

RESPONSE
I feel that in the society, intellectual, industrious and honest people are preferred. This brings me to the point on how I think that PSLE is needed. PSLE is the first hurdle you pass that brings you closer to completing your educational journey, such as taking your A levels. Preparing children in handling the stress that they are subjected to, it lets them have the feel of how a national exam would be like. Furthermore, children's brains soak up information like a sponge—it is good for them to begin learning at a young age and test their memory. Hence, I think that PSLE is beneficial for children.

  1. PSLE is necessary and should not be abolished. PSLE , a system of meritocracy as the government puts it ,helps assess every student's intellectual ability and determine how each student can proceed to the next level of education. The ones that performed academically better can be enrolled into the Integrated Programme which directly leads to A-Level examinations. The average students will be in the Express stream. The ones below the average ,might need additional academic support so they are classified under the Normal Stream . Of course, students preparing for the PSLE will undergo stress but PSLE differentiates students so they will be admitted into the right category of schools.

  3. I feel that PSLE is required as it is the first barrier that children have to face when they are at the age of 12. The children should be able to handle the stress from PSLE as PSLE would prepare them for the upcoming challenges they would have to face in secondary schools. PSLE would actually ensure that the students go to the right secondary schools judging from the PSLE score. By this PSLE score, students would be streamed according to their abilities and be admitted into a stream that fully suits them for more effective learning. Thus, I feel that PSLE should not be removed.

  4. I feel that PSLE is necessary and should not be removed. Although some may disagree, saying that children should not be undergoing so much stress at such a young age, I feel that PSLE is a good way to gauge a atudent's ability and allow him or her to continue his or her education at a level that they are able to cope with. Therefore, PSLE should not be removed. - Jane:)

  5. I do agree that PSLE isn't easy and students will face a lot of stress during that period of time. It determines which secondary school you will be enrolled in thus school teachers and parents will give you a lot of stress. However I believe that PSLE should not be abolished. Taking PSLE helps as it is the first national examination one will take in his school life. This will enable students to be more prepared for bigger future examinations such as A levels. PSLE will be stressful for young children but I believe that it will better prepare students for the future hurdles. (Zhiyi)

  6. I personally feel that PSLE is not necessary. PSLE is supposed to allow primary six students to know which secondary school you are entitled to go into. If PSLE is taken out and students are allowed to go to any secondary school of their liking, they will not feel the stress of having to prepare a major examination at such a young age. I agree that PSLE is preparing children to handle the stress. however, If one is not in top conditions on the day of the examinations, the score may be affected and therefore four to six years of your life might be wasted at another secondary school. One is not given the chance retake the PSLE unless you scored really low. This would make the more intelligent students discriminate the less capable students, therefore I think PSLE is not necessary.

  7. I agree with Angela that PSLE is the first hurdle we pass that brings us closer to completing your educational journey and hence, it is necessary. I feel that PSLE is the first examination to prepare us to face more major national examinations such as the O' and A' levels. In addition, it will evaluate each student's ability and place them in a school that suits them best so that they can cope with their studies as well as building up their path to successful individuals. However, to many students and parents, PSLE may seem to be a burden for the students, adding on to their stress level, but to me, I think that it is beneficial as it better prepare me for upcoming standards and examinations. Thus, I still think that it is necessary to take PSLE.

  8. In my opinion, I think PSLE is necessary and not redundant. As tests and exams are often used to assess the students' learning, without PSLE will mean that teachers are unable to assess what the student has learnt in the past 6 years in primary school if there is no way other than PSLE to determine their standard. Also, teachers cannot gauge the students' ability and post them to the correct type secondary school that matches their capabilities. Although preparing for PSLE will mean stress, I think that it will benefit them in the long run as they will be posted to secondary schools that matches their academic standard so they can catch up with schoolwork.

  9. I feel that psle is necessary. this is because psle can be used to test us on how much we have learnt over our past 6 years in primary school. it also serves as a platform to test our abilities. psle is also used for streaming to secondary schools, putting people of similar standards together for more effective leaning. psle is a learning platform for us, and one in which would and should aid us in our learning. thus psle is a necessity.

  10. It is interesting to hear the responses from teenagers who have gone through the primary school system and came out alive in the PSLE exams. Quite a few believe that the PSLE should not be abolished.

The PSLE has served the country well but is there a need to tweak some aspects of it in order to cater to the changing demographics of the population? Some of the important things that we value are meritocracy and social mobility. Perhaps a closer look at the spirit of the PSLE should be taken to ensure that the values are kept even if the system evolves to keep up with the needs of the changing population.

  11. I feel that PSLE is actually necessary for teenagers as it is the test that allows them or let them have the motivation to study as they want to score well in their tests . Although it might not be the correct mentality to study just because they want to get good grades but at least that's the basic for them to start learning

  12. I personally feel that PSLE is necessary as it tests pupils on what they have learnt for the past six years. The PSLE is also used for streaming to secondary schools. If pupils are able to perform well in their PSLE, they would be able to go to an express stream which is more suited for their higher ability. Likewise, if pupils are not able to perform well enough, they would be placed into the normal stream. So I think the PSLE is necessary as it can show the ability of a pupil.

  13. I think that PSLE is important as it lets us know our standards and when we get allocated to a school, it will be based on our skills and academic results and let us have a better environment for us to cope as the people around you will have similar standards. However, I still think that PSLE is really stressful for the students.

  14. I feel that PSLE is very important and should not be abolished. After PSLE, students are streamed to different secondary schools based on their results. Students of similar learning abilities are placed together, by doing this, all students are able to benefit as they are able to learn at a comfortable pace and their needs can be met with ease. Therefore PSLE is important as it allows students to know their standards.

  15. I personally feel that PSLE is necessary. Taking PSLE may be very stressful for students, however, it has benefits. PSLE allows us to know our standards and after the exam, we will be streamed to different secondary schools. Students also learn how to handle stress well when preparing for the examination, they will motivate themselves instead of stressing themselves out. This way, they will be mentally prepared for other examinations, such as O level or A level. Thus, PSLE is necessary as students can know thier standards and learn to handle stress.

  16. PSLE, many are debating about whetyer it is really necessary. Personally I feel that PSLE is necessary. Although it might be a little stressful for 12 year olds, it pushes them to their limits and allows the education system to effectively stream the students according to ability. This streaming makes learning easier for students as they advance to the next level if education as they are grouped according to ability, allowing teachers to teach at a oace suitable for all students.
